"The influence that the Dutch psychiatrist Marius Romme, whose work instigated the Hearing Voices Network, has had on academic research is in no small part attributable to his discovery that voice-hearers profess a range of interpretations of and attitudes about their experiences. It came as a surprise to many that there existed people who heard voices who were not ill and who did not consider themselves to be ill." (Daniel B. Smith, Muses, Madmen, and Prophets. Rethinking the history, science, and meaning of auditory hallucination, p. 217).
